Traditions

With the holidays nearly here I am getting a wee bit excited.  I love the holidays and everything that it means to me; time with my family and friends, great food, gift giving, and traditions.  I am a big believer in tradition.  Now don’t get me wrong change is a necessary, but when it comes to holidays, traditions are the things I look forward to.

For the last (at least as far as I can remember) 20 years my sisters and I have been making Lefse for thanksgiving.  We were taught by our grandmother starting at a very early age.  Each year we don our aprons and cover someone’s house ceiling to floor in flour.  Despite my love of Lefse day, there were years that it got downright painful.  My husband still hides for lefse day.  There were years that one sister cried, kids were crying, it took 8 hours to do 10 lbs, or our dough didn’t turn out.  However in spite of that it is our tradition and Thanksgiving wouldn’t be complete without it.  This year we had 6 kids under foot trying to “help” several of them took turns rolling out dough and putting holes in the “rags”.  I wouldn’t have had it any other way.  Someday I hope that they can all get together and have the same sort of traditions that we do today. 

Just like the Lefse tradition in my family I hope to have other traditions for my kids to look forward to like going out to find the perfect Christmas tree, baking cookies, watching the Grinch while snuggled on the couch, wrapping homemade presents, and so much more.  This year Olivia looked so grown up picking out the ornaments and climbing the ladder to hang each one by one.  What a magical time this is for children.  How excited they get not only by the thought of getting gifts but also picking out the perfect present for their favorite people.  Getting to share and build new memories with my kids is one of my favorite things in the whole world and only gets better during the holidays.  What more could you ask for but to make memories with the people you love and remember how blessed we all truly are during this magical season.   This year I will be sharing some recipes that are traditions in my house and a couple of crafts that I hope to become tradition here on Hazelettes.  Just remember don't stress the little things, and always have a happy holiday!
